REST. When was the last time you sat down, maybe in your favorite comfy chair or out on your deck and just sat there? Or the last time you picked up a good book and read for pleasure? Rest doesn’t come easy to us here in the DC Area. We are a people who go go go. We are prone to work late hours, worry about deadlines, and take work home with us. Over the past two months I decided to take some time and discover what it looked like to REST. That didn’t mean that I didn’t work or accomplish anything. BUT, I made space in my life to relax most days and enjoy some time either to myself or with someone I loved.
Rest didn’t come easy. In a world where Facebook and Twitter rule our lives. Where I was constantly distracted by an endless feed of chatter about people’s lives and videos about people trying new foods or cats being naughty. I knew it was going to be a difficult thing to learn to shut down all the noise. The first step was going to be to get rid of the one thing that I clung to when there was silence: The Facebook Feed.
I started by deleting The Facebook App and steering clear of social media for quite some time. Not having it was refreshing and terrifying at the same time. How was I going to stay up on the “news”? I felt as though I had no access to the outside world. I wouldn’t know when my friend Suzee was going on her vacation (or returning). Or who was supposed to show up to my house for game night. It wasn’t long before I quickly learned that the world kept turning just the same. Suzee went on her vacation and returned and people showed up for my game night.
The most freedom came with how much of my time was returned to me on a daily basis just from “scanning” those feeds. I no longer spent hours a day “down the rabbit hole” of videos and articles that may have meant nothing to me in particular. It was amazing to discover and rekindle lost joys and hobbies including meditating, reading, and my love for learning languages. I decided to pick up learning Italian again! Over the last couple of months, I have learned a few principles that I truly believe can help anyone add a little more “rest” in their lives!
- Provide yourself with some space for rest
- Ditch the phone/tablet/laptop
- Consider limiting your social media time (I’ve moved to limiting my social media time to once or twice per day on the computer, I still don’t have the app on my phone because I know it’d be a temptation to just continually scroll through – don’t forget to check in @thechrystalaincreative when you do check Facebook though!)
- Find & Do an activity that gives you joy (reading, meditation, knitting, learning, etc.)
The Big Announcement
As you can see, it’s been a while. I have pretty much been MIA on this journey of rest for the last month or two as you may have noticed! While I was taking a bit of time to rest and spend time with my family, I had the realization that I wanted to create a space for my clients and my future clients. My website wasn’t exactly what I wanted it to be and so I set out to create that space! I was learning to rest but I was also working REALLY hard behind the scenes of The Chrystalain Creative. If you’ve been to chrystalain.com anytime recently, you might have noticed a few changes! The site might look a little different! If you’re reading this blog, you will definitely be noticing those changes as my blog layout has changed dramatically!
I am excited to announce the relaunch of The Chrystalain Creative Website! I’ve been working for the past month and a half to create a site just for you! I have digitally hammered and pounded, stamped and shaped this site with love and affection with you in mind each step of the way! As you learn to rest this month, I hope that you would take some time to think about your next photo session! At The Chrystalain Creative, I never want your session to be stressful in any way. I will walk with you through every step of the way and take care of your every need. That is what I’m here for! I hope that you take some time this week to take a break in your favorite comfy place and just reflect.
Would you take a minute and share The Chrystalain Creative with one friend?
